1. How does Somnius work?

Somnius is a 2½” square, thin USB powered instrument with that uses the resonant energy discoveries of Nikola Tesla to generate patented Fibonacci frequency Bio-Pulses™ creating non-sensory brainwave entrainment for natural sleep. Somnius restores your body’s Circadian Rhythms while interrupting unwanted electromagnetic radiation that can interfere with sleep. There are no pills to take, no headphones to wear, no ‘relaxing’ teas to drink, just plug Somnius in and slip it under your pillow for a great night’s sleep from the first night.

2. Where is the best location to place Somnius?

With Somnius connected to its power adapter and the adapter plugged into an active wall power outlet, and the desired sleep program selected as explained in the previous sections, slide Somnius under your pillow with either side facing up. Alternatively, you can place Somnius on your nightstand or headboard, with the bottom side up to avoid the flashing SLED indicator from disturbing your sleep. Somnius produces a torus (donut) shaped field of healthy energies approximately 3 feet (1 meter) in diameter. Somnius can be used by one or two people. When used by two people it should be placed on top of the mattress (preferably under the fitted sheet) and centered between the pillows. To prevent Somnius from sliding off the mattress or out from under the pillow, it should be placed under the fitted bottom sheet or mattress pad to hold it in place. Once Somnius is turned on the first night at bed time it can be left on continuously. It is nnot necessary to unplug it in the morning. If your sleep time changes by more than plus or minus 45 minutes each night you should restart Somnius by unplugging the power adapter, waiting five seconds and reconnecting the power at your bedtime.

3. Is Somnius safe to use with my baby?

Yes. Whether your infant or child sleeps with you, near you or you use Somnius in the baby’s crib, it is perfectly safe to use. Our bodies will only absorb or use an amount of resonant energy based upon its mass, or weight. The smaller size of an infant means a child or infant will be receive less energy than the larger mass of an adult.

4. Can I use Somnius with my Negative Ion Generator?

Negative Ion Generators, like Ionic Breeze or other high energy discharge air cleaners, generate a large field on negative ions that act like a static charge and can damage sensitive electronic equipment like Tesla Jewels. Tesla Jewels should be kept at least 6 feet away from any negative ion generator, and its AC power adapter should never be plugged into the same power outlet as the negative ion generator.

5. How do I select the right sleep program for me?

Your Somnius comes preconfigured to start with Preset Sleep Program #1, Deep Sleep, the Red wave indication, and it is recommended all new users start with this sleep program. Somnius should be placed 12 to 18 inches from your head for the first few nights. Somnius sleep presets produce a repeating 12 hour sleep cycle, which runs continuously so you do not need to stop and start or restart Somnius each night, unless your bed time changes by more than +/- 45 minutes each night. Preset #4, Deeper Sleep, and #6, Deepest Sleep have fixed length sleep rhythms of 90 minutes each to induce the deepest sleep cycles. The remaining sleep entrainment preset programs produce gradually shortening sleep rhythms through the night to encourage natural waking after 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

Difficulty falling asleep and on sleep meds

Continue taking your same dose of sleeping medicine and do not reduce the dosage until you’re sleeping better with Somnius. Most sleeping pills have a tendency to create a dependency and stopping cold is never recommended. When you are able to reduce the dose, titrate it by reducing it to half the dose for at least a week and then half it again to a quarter dose for another week, at least.

Change the Somnius preset sleep program from the default #1 Deep Sleep that flashes Red every 15 seconds when running to Preset #4 Deeper Sleep, that starts flashes green and then changes colors while running to indicate what stage of sleep is being emitted. To change presets, while Somnius is running press the SELECT white dome pushbutton switch on the back by pinching the Somnius so you can observe the Status LED on the front change colors. Each preset is a different color when selected, Red, Amber, Yellow and Green. The White indication is for a trial preset and can be skipped. Repeated pressing of SELECT will simply cycle through the programs. After running this new preset once Somnius will remember and always run this when it’s started, until you change it again.

Plug Somnius in when you are ready to retire for the evening and slide it under your pillow and under the fitted sheet to help keep it in place during the night. The closer it is to the back of your neck the better it will influence your sleep. If your bed time does not change more than 45 minutes either direction then you can leave Somnius running continuously.

When you lie down with your head on your pillow flex and release each muscle group from your face and neck down your arms and abdomen and then legs and finally feet and toes, successively flexing and then releasing them. This helps on several levels to distract our mind from the worries keeping us awake and helps the muscles release unwanted tension that can distract from sleep.

Keep all other electronics at least an arm’s length away from your head. A rule of thumb is that anything that plugs in, other than Somnius, should be as far away from your head as your thumb is from your head.

Awakening during the night and difficulty falling back to sleep

When someone experiences waking during the night and has difficulty falling back asleep we recommend changing to Preset #4 when you retire to bed tonight. Here are some details and this should help relieve the fatigue you are experiencing during the day. After running this new preset once Somnius will remember and always run this when it’s started, until you change it again. This is done while Somnius is on and pressing the SELECT dome switch three times to change to Preset #4, Deeper Sleep, which flashes green when selected. The Yellow preset #3 may appear to be slightly green in color so make sure you have pressed SELECT three times slowly while watching the LED change colors to ensure you have #4. Repeated pressing of SELECT will simply cycle through the programs.

Deeper Sleep (Preset #4) uses lower and hence deeper sleep frequencies and its sleep cycles are consistent in length, whereas the other sleep presets use gradually shortening sleep cycles to help awaken you after 7 to 8 hours of sleep. I prefer #4 and use it nightly myself.

Additionally, Deeper Sleep preset also changes the color of the LED as the sleep cycle progresses through the night to two flashes every 15 seconds to indicate which sleep stages are being induced by the Bio-Pulses emitters. Purple and White indicate Dream sleep; Blue and Turquoise for Stage 1, lighter sleep; Green for Stage 2, light sleep; Yellow for Stage 3, deep sleep; and Amber and Red for Stage 4, deepest sleep.

If you awaken during the night please look at the color being emitted by Somnius to indicate what stage of sleep you were awakened from. If Somnius is flashing White, Purple or even blue, it is likely that you awoke during or just after a dream, which is normal as our brainwave activity that occurs during dream R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement) portions of sleep is similar to waking states. What is not normal of course is having difficulty falling back to sleep. If this is the case when you awake during the night try to note if you remember dreaming and know that Somnius is now emitting gradually lowering frequencies of Bio-Pulses to lead you back to sleep.

If Somnius is emitting Yellow, Amber or Red then you were awakened during the deepest parts of sleep and this usually only occurs when we are disturbed by some event such as a noise, our sleep partner snoring or moving around, a pet jumping on the bed to snuggle with us, or a biological imperative to empty our bladder. Again, please look at the color of the LED and if its Amber or Red see if you can identify what might have awakened you.

If Somnius is flashing Turquoise, or green or if the colors are widely different from night to night then this usually indicates some underlying health problem that should be addressed. One possible cause of this occurring is medications that interfere with sleep. Some types of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications can interfere with sleep. We always recommend Somnius users continue taking the same medications as before, and if these seem to be interfering with sleep to discuss this with the prescribing physician.

Please try this for the next week and keep track of the colors emitted if you continue to awaken. Also, plug Somnius in just prior to retiring to bed to ensure its starting at the beginning of a sleep cycle when you go to sleep. Please let me know how you are doing and what colors you’ve noticed.

6. Do I need to unplug Somnius each morning?

No, Somnius is designed to be left plugged in and running continually. It repeats its 8 hour sleep program every 12 hours so it will be running when you retire to bed the next time.

7. How long before Somnius will improve my sleep?

Most users experience an improvement the first night with Somnius. If you don’t then

8. How can I tell Somnius is working?

Every time Somnius is started, changes presets or restarts a running preset program, it does an internal diagnostic test to verify its Bio-Pulse emitters are operating correctly. As long as the SLED is flashing the normal indications as shown in the User Guide you can be assured it is operating properly. If there is a failure, Somnius will rapidly and repeatedly flash a unique two color sequence to indicate the source of the problem.

9. Can two people use Somnius?

Yes. Somnius was designed as a personal sleep instrument, intended for use by one person. However, its field of influence extends 18-24 inches in all directions and so Somnius can be placed between two persons’ pillow, under the fitted sheet or mattress pad.

10. Will I need to use Somnius to sleep from now on?

Somnius helps you fall asleep naturally by entraining your brainwaves to follow healthy sleep cycles. It is not habit forming and the benefits of sleeping well with Somnius will last after using it. However, if whatever was causing your difficulty sleeping is not corrected or changed, then Somnius should continue to be used.

11. What is the EMR detector?

The Bio-Pulse emitter coils can also function as a detector for near field electromagnetic radiation from devices like your cell phone, tablet, computer or TV. When placed in the EMR detector mode, Somnius will flash its SLED different colors to indicate the presence of these disruptive fields.

12. How do I activate the EMR Detector?

To activate the internal EMR detector press and hold the SELECT dome switch as explained in the previous section, until the SLED flashes Blue four times. Release the SELECT dome switch when the Blue flashing begins. In safe EMR environments the SLED should now be illuminated in a continuous Blue color indicating only a slight amount of EMR is being detected. Off indicates no measurable EMR and Blue indicates less than 3 milliGauss (3 thousandths of a Gauss) of field strength. If any other color is seen then the immediate area has a greater level of EMR and the source should be identified and possibly eliminated.

EMR fields diminish rapidly as you move further away from its source and the internal EMR detector will usually need to be placed directly in contact with most EMR sources to indicate its presence. The strength of EMR is indicated by four different brightness levels within the 7 different colors with no illumination as zero field strength, Blue being the lowest safe level below 3 milliGauss and White indicating the highest level of more than 25 milliGauss. As you move the instrument next to an EMR source the brightness of the SLED will increase first and then the color will change.

13. What is a wellness number (Critical Flicker Fusion)?

Your Rhythmedics Somnius includes the ability to measure and report your personal Wellness Number, also referred to as your Critical Flicker Fusion (CFF) number.
Flicker Fusion is the rate at which a distinctly flashing on and off light appears to fuse into a constantly illuminated light. It was discovered in 1945 during testing of WWII pilots returning home after the war with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that their recovery could be measured objectively by tracking their flicker fusion frequency, which NuTesla calls the Wellness Number. The higher the numbers the further along the pilots were in their recovery. Your wellness number is a personal indicator of your overall wellness. The higher your wellness number, the higher your personal wellness level.

14. How do I measure my Wellness Number?

To activate this feature press and hold the SETUP switch for 1 second and release it. The Spectrum LED will flash Red 6 times to indicate your Wellness Number testing is beginning. After these 6 flashes the Red SLED will appear to be lit continuously when it is actually flashing very rapidly.

Hold Somnius between your thumb and forefinger close to your face with the SLED directly in front of your dominant eye and your forefinger finger on the SETUP switch to press it when you see a definite flickering of the SLED. As the program runs the on and off times are lengthened and the apparently constantly lit Red SLED appears to start flickering, which to some looks like water boiling when staring directly into the Red SLED. As the frequency continues to slow this boiling appearance begins to be more pronounced where there is still no time when the SLED appears to be off. As the frequency continues to slow this flickering becomes a distinct on and off flashing.

Pressing the lower SETUP dome switch will cause the flickering to decrease one step and stops the automatic slowing of the flicker rate for measuring. Pressing and holding the lower SETUP dome switch will decrease the flickering rate more quickly.

Pressing the upper SELECT dome switch will cause the flickering to increase one step and stops the automatic slowing of the flicker rate for measuring. Pressing and holding the upper SELECT dome switch will increase the flickering rate more quickly.

Once you press either the SETUP or SELECT dome switches two things occur. First, the automatic decreasing of the flickering rate is suspended (the SLED continues to flash at that rate) and secondly, a 5 second timer starts which ends the measuring if it times out. If either switch is pressed, the flickering rate is adjust up or down accordingly and the 5 second timer is restarted. It is recommended to take some time to press and release the two switches, separately, to adjust the flickering rate up and down until you are satisfied it is at the point of fusing to a constantly on light.

After releasing both switches and the five second timer expires the measuring phase ends and Tesla Jewels will then report your Wellness Number. The Red SLED will turn off and Somnius will then report your three digit Wellness Number as three series of flashes. The first series of flashes uses the white SLED to count out the tens digit in multiples of ten (four white flashes is 40, 5 white flashes is 50), the second series of flashes uses the green SLED to count out the ones digit (6 green flashes is 6), and the third series of flashes uses the amber SLED to count out the tenths digit (4 amber flashes is .4). Adding the three series of flashes together yields your personal Wellness Number (46.4 or 56.4 from the example above). The upper limit is 89.9. If the ones or tenths digit is a zero it will be reported by a single flash of the Blue SLED (the tens digit cannot be zero). If you counted 5 white flashes then saw a blue flash followed by 3 amber flashes your Wellness Number would be 50.3.

15. What is a normal Wellness Number?

Most people report having a Wellness Number between 50 and 90. Due to differences in the physiology of our eyes you cannot compare your wellness number to someone else. By measuring and tracking your wellness number you can track improvements to your health resulting the use of Somnius.

16. The SLED doesn’t light when I plug in the power adapter?

If Somnius doesn’t illuminate the SLED when connected to its power adapter then try using the USB programming cable to power Somnius. If it still doesn’t illuminate contact NuTesla support at support@nutesla.com.

17. The SLED flashes two colors rapidly when I plug in the power adapter?

This indicates Tesla Jewels has detected an internal component failure. Contact NuTesla support via email at support.nutesla.com for instructions have your Somnius repaired.

18. How do I check to see what version and sleep programs I have?

Connect Somnius to an active USB port on either a Windows PC or MacOS computer and press and hold the START dome switch until the SLED starts flashing green or red and green and then release the dome switch. Somnius will enumerate (appear to the computer) as a flash drive named Rhythmedics. View the contents of this flash drive and open the file named NUTESLA.HTM. This will open your default Internet Browser and Somnius’ Instrument Information window will be displayed listing its Serial Number, Version Number and installed preset programs. When done, press and release the SELECT dome switch to exit the flash drive mode. Windows or MacOS may display a warn in message when this occurs, but it will not harm either your computer or Somnius.

19. How do I update my Somnius?

To update Somnius click on this link to access detailed instructions and update files for Windows PC or MacOS.

20. Where can I download the User Guide?

The current User Guide can be downloaded by clicking here.

21. Can I extend the warranty after it’s expired?

Yes. A low cost warranty extension may be purchased from NuTesla by clicking here.

22. I have dental implants and Somnius seemed to make me more agitated rather than restful. Will this subside?

If you were experiencing any headaches or teeth aches before turning Somnius on, then it is possible the energies from Somnius were exacerbating those symptoms. These will subside, and rather quickly. If you had Somnius under your pillow, move it to under your mattress or on your nightstand. Keep it at this further distance for 3 to 4 nights before moving it closer. Some people are more sensitive than others, and it can take a few nights to slowly shift your body’s frequencies into a healthier balance.

Also, try Program 4, Deeper Sleep, (flashes Green when selected), which uses lower frequencies than Program 1 Deep Sleep. Program 6, Deepest Sleep (flashes Blue when selected), has the lowest frequencies for sleep and can be used for energy sensitive individuals.
